Season Preview: Volleyball will lean on leadership in 2019

SALISBURY, Md. – The 2019 Salisbury University volleyball team will look to make great strides in its performance both on and off the court as it prepares for the 2019 season. The Sea Gulls will look to make noise both in Capital Athletic Conference play as well as in their out of conference schedule.

Head coach Justin Turco is excited about the mix of talent knowing that "culture wise we have a very strong team." Turco also knows that each and every one of his players can be a leader, as the team consists of six rookies and 12 total underclassmen, all of whom are expected to make a great impact on the court. The coaching staff does expect great leadership out of the upperclassmen and in particularly the seniors, who are expected "to teach all of the younger players how to be the leaders that they are."

The team will be anchored by two of its returning All-CAC honorees in senior outside hitter Carley Cleland and senior libero Hailey Dougherty. Cleland, who earned her first all-conference honors being named First Team, finished 2018 with career-highs in kills, 214, total attacks, 570, and hitting percentage, with a mark of .291. Dougherty in the meantime time was named All-CAC Second Team, which was also the first all-conference accolade of her career, after a successful year in which she posted 524 digs while averaging 5.09 digs per set, which ranked her third in the CAC.

Salisbury was selected to finish fourth in the CAC Volleyball Preseason Poll, earning 14 total points. The Sea Gulls finished one point behind York College of Pennsylvania and in front of fifth and sixth place finishers Southern Virginia University, which totaled 11 points, and St. Mary's College of Maryland, which accumulated five points. The Captains of Christopher Newport University earned five of the six possible first-place votes to finish as the unanimous top team in the poll while the University of Mary Washington finished second picking up one first-place vote.

The Sea Gulls will open their season on Friday, August 30 when they host the Sea Gull Classic beginning at 4 p.m. Salisbury will square off against Thiel College in its first match of the day.
