NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University volleyball team traveled to No. 22 Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Captains 3-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Nicole Venturelli led all Sea Gulls (13-8, 2-3 CAC) with 11 kills and was the only Gull to tally double-digit kills. She totaled 11 kills on 33 attacks while posting a hitting percentage of .182. Venturelli also chipped in on the defensive effort, totaling three blocks and four digs.
Salisbury dropped the opening set by the final score of 25-16 as the Captains (19-4, 5-1 CAC) totaled a hitting percentage of .257 and 13 kills to the maroon and gold's 10 kills and hitting percentage of .023.
After the Sea gulls fell behind 2-0 in set two by dropping a 25-21 decision, the third set went to win-by-two before the Captains emerged victorious, 28-26. Salisbury posted a hitting percentage of .378 while totaling 18 kills to Christopher Newport's 16.
Venturelli totaled four kills in the third set along with four other Sea Gulls. Carley Cleland, who finished the afternoon with six kills, tallied three in the final set. The teams battled back-and-forth throughout the set before the Gulls fell behind 24-23 late in the set. However, the maroon and gold battled back to level the match 24-24.
Kills from Hannah Sullivan and Venturelli leveled the match again at 26-26 before the host Captains ran off the final two points to end the match and send Christopher Newport home victorious.
Salisbury returns to action on Wednesday, October 24 when it closes out the regular season at York College of Pennsylvania. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
