Blue Jays outlast Sea Gulls, 3-2, in five-set match

BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 21 Salisbury University volleyball team took its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, falling to Johns Hopkins University, 3-2.

Each set was close, with the largest margin of victory coming in the final set, with the Blue Jays closing the match, 15-10.

The Sea Gulls won the opening game, 25-22, but the teams would trade sets, as Johns Hopkins won the second, 25-23.

After SU grabbed the third, 25-22, Hopkins forced the fifth set, with the 25-21 victory in the fourth, ultimately winning the match.

The Gulls were led by freshman Katie Stouffer and juniors, Julie Poston and Mattie Smith, who all registered double-digit kills. Stouffer led the way with 15, while Poston and Smith added 13 and 12, respectively.

Sophomore Kacey Franz registered 50 assists on the night for the second time she has eclipsed the half-century mark this season, and junior Michelle Meehan led the way defensively with her fifth match in the last six going over the 20-dig mark with 25.

The Sea Gulls now look forward to the Hawks Invitational at State University of New York at New Paltz in New Paltz, N.Y., which starts on Friday, with their opening match against Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) College at 6 p.m.
