GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 22 Salisbury University volleyball team opened the 2013 season with commanding 3-0 sweeps over Gallaudet University and Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) Friday night at Gettysburg College's Battlefield Classic. First-year head coach Justin Turco collected the first victories of his young career.
Salisbury (2-0) defeated Gallaudet (1-1) by the scores of 25-21, 25-9, 25-22 and topped Mount Saint Mary (0-2) 25-12, 25-12, 25-13. The Sea Gulls recorded an impressive .348 attack percentage on 184 total attempts.
Junior outside hitter Mattie Smith led the Sea Gulls with 19 kills on 42 attempts. Sophomore setter Kacey Franz quarterbacked the offense and dished out 60 assists. Junior defensive specialist Michelle Meehan was stellar on defense as she tallied 31 digs.
As a team, Salisbury recorded 78 kills, 67 assists, 18 service aces, 126 digs and five total blocks. The Sea Gull defense limited Gallaudet and Mount Saint Mary to a combined .096 attack percentage.
Salisbury concludes play at the Battlefield Classic Saturday with matches against Rutgers University-Camden and host Gettysburg College. SU takes on Rutgers-Camden at noon and Gettysburg at 2 p.m. inside the Bream Wright Hauser Athletic Complex.

Smith was efficient against the Bison as she put down 10 kills on 23 attempts and committed just one attack error. Smith also collected 13 digs for a double-double.
Franz tallied a double-double with a career-high 31 assists and 11 digs. Meehan (17 digs), freshman Gina Fischetti (12 digs) and senior Jess Tallant (eight digs) also provided solid play on the back line.
Elsewhere on offense, junior outside hitter Julie Poston put down nine kills on 21 attempts and senior middle hitter Tam Weems had seven kills on 17 attempts. Freshman Katie Stouffer (six kills) and junior Nikki Binetti (five kills) were active in their Salisbury debuts.
Salisbury collected seven service aces during the match. Meehan tallied four aces and Weems collected three of her own. The Sea Gull defense limited Gallaudet to 21 kills on 76 attempts for a .145 attack percentage. The Bison had more errors (eight) than kills (six) in the second set.
Salisbury 3, Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) 0
The Salisbury offense collected 35 kills against Mount Saint Mary and the damage was spread out amongst several players. Smith led the offensive attack with nine kills on 19 attempts but Poston and Stouffer were the most efficient. Poston and Stouffer both put down eight kills on 15 attempts with zero errors for a stellar .533 attack percentage.
Franz turned in a strong all-around performance of 29 assists, eight digs and three kills on five attempts. The Sea Gull offense only committed five attack errors against the Knights and finished with an outstanding .357 attack percentage.
Salisbury was strong behind the service line as the Sea Gulls recorded 11 aces. Weems and Tallant both had three aces while Smith recorded two of her own.
Defensively, Meehan and Fischetti continued to shine for the Sea Gulls. Meehan tallied a game-high 14 digs and Fischetti was in double digits for a second consecutive match with 10 digs.
