SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team finished off a two-game home stand on Wednesday evening when it hosted Capital Athletic Conference opponent Christopher Newport University, but fell to the Captains, 81-45.
The Sea Gulls (7-6, 15-9 CAC) struggled to get going on offense in the opening quarter, shooting 1-for-13 from the field. The Captains (19-5, 10-3 CAC) pressed hard on defense, while finding their groove at the other end of the court to shoot 6-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. After 10 minutes, Christopher Newport led Salisbury, 18-2.
The Captains scored the first four points of the second quarter to open their lead to 22-2, but a Jada Welbon triple sparked the Sea Gulls. Welbon added another from beyond the arc towards the end of the period, while Dalina Julien also drained a look from downtown, and the maroon and gold began to find its groove offensively. However, Christopher Newport kept up the pressure on the other end, outscoring Salisbury in the quarter, 18-12, to take a 36-14 halftime lead.
A Welbon jumper just eight seconds in kicked off the third quarter and a 10-5 run for the Sea Gulls that was capped by another Julien triple after four minutes. However, momentum shifted quickly as the Captains kicked off a 19-6 run of their own.
The team returns to action when it travels to CAC opponent Frostburg State University for its regular season finale on Saturday, February 16. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
