Sea Gulls hold on to take season series over Eagles

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team continued its two-game home stand when it hosted Capital Athletic Conference opponent the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday night and came away with a hard-fought win, 49-41.

Salisbury (14-6, 6-3 CAC) and Mary Washington (10-10, 4-5 CAC) matched up well in the first quarter. The Sea Gulls gained an early 7-2 lead that began with a Megan Konig triple to open the contest, but the Eagles battled back to cut the deficit to 11-10 after the first 10 minutes.

The Sea Gulls briefly stumbled on offense to start the second quarter, as the Eagles' defense held the home team scoreless over the first 6:27 of play. The intensity was matched on the other end by the maroon and gold, however, as it surrendered only two points over the same time frame. A Jada Welbon triple broke the scoring drought for the Sea Gulls, who then began to click on offense in time to end the half with a 9-2 run and take a 22-14 lead at the break.

The third quarter began much the same for the Sea Gulls as the second quarter, as they were held scoreless for the first 7:00, while the Eagles heated up offensively over the same span, going on a 13-0 run to take a 27-22 lead. A Courtney Brigham layup sparked a quick 5-0 Salisbury run to pull the game even at 27 apiece with three minutes remaining, but the Eagles scored a basket in the final minute to close the frame with a 29-27 lead.

The fourth quarter was a different story, as the Sea Gulls caught fire offensively with a 13-4 run over the first five minutes. The run was led by Kaylee Otlowski's four points and another Welbon triple to take a 40-33 lead. The Eagles cut their deficit to only three with just over three minutes to play but could not pull even as Salisbury held on for the victory.

Otlowski recorded team highs with 10 points and six rebounds. Amber Onyekwere and Rachel Ryan led all Sea Gulls with three assists each.

The team returns to action on Saturday, February 2 when it travels north to take on CAC opponent Penn State University-Harrisburg. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
