Merkel named to the All-CAC first team

NORTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Salisbury University women's basketball junior guard Monica Merkel was honored by the Capital Athletic Conference as she earned first team all-conference honors. The lone guard to make the first team led SU in nine categories (five offense and four defense) in the 2007-08 campaign where the Sea Gulls finished 12-15 overall and 8-8 in the CAC.

The junior led the Sea Gulls in points scored with 417 along with the team's best scoring average (16.0 points per game). The Walkersville, Md., native also led SU in total rebounds (181), defensive rebounds (116) and blocked shots (nine).

The St. John's at Prospect Hall graduate lead the Sea Gulls to the CAC tournament semifinal round where the maroon and gold lost Marymount (Va.) University. The 2007-08 season was Merkel's first since she made 12 appearances in the 2005-06 season. That year she scored 176 points for the maroon and gold.
