Sea Gulls set to take flight at 2019 CAC championships

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University track & field program will travel to Newport News, Virginia on Friday, February 15 to compete in the Capital Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Christopher Newport University.

How We Got Here

The Sea Gulls competed in five different meets this indoor season, including three at Division I institutions and two at the Division III level. Salisbury bookended its regular season at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, competing in the Eastern Shore Cappy Anderson Invitational and the Eastern Shore Combined Events Meet.

The team also competed at Division I George Mason University as well as traveling twice to the site of the CAC championships, competing at the CNU Holiday Open and the Vince Brown Invitational.

Last Time Out

The maroon and gold last competed on February 8-9 at the Eastern Shore Combined Events Meet. The team turned in a solid outing as three school records fell during the two-day meet. Kyleigh Dumas, the 4x200-meter relay team of Jack McCloskey, Michael Van Gieson, Alex Hardman, and Ethan Binnix, and Hardman once more all found their way into the track & field record books over this past weekend.

Dumas broke the record in the pole vault, clearing the bar at a height of 11' 8", while Hardman broke the 500-meter record, coming home in 1:06.64. Hardman would go one to aid the 4x200-meter relay team in breaking the school record as well, as the team completed the race in a time of 1:31.73.

Salisbury at the Championships

Salisbury has captured a total of five total indoor track & field championships. The men's team won four straight from 2012-2015 while the women claimed their lone crown in 2012.

Last Year at the Championships

The women's team captured a second-place finish while the men placed fourth in 2018. Overall, the team broke six records with Jamie Farley breaking four total records in just two races. Farley broke the school record in the 200-meter dash and then went on to break three records in the 400-meter dash, which included the CAC indoor championship, CAC meet, and school records. Taylor Bailey broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles while Conner Masteran broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run.  

The maroon and gold concluded the weekend with 17 different athletes earning All-CAC honors. The women garnered seven accolades, including six being named to the first team, while the men earned 10 honors, with five being named to the first team.

Mastering the Distance

Masteran has turned in an exceptional indoor season thus far as he has broken two records, competing in just four meets. Masteran broke both the 3K and 5K school records during the season, breaking the 5,000-meter run record in his first attempt of the season at the CNU Holiday Open. Masteran came home in a time of 15:07.65, which broke the previous mark he set last season of 15:17.25.

Masteran went on to break the record in the 3,000-meter run at the 2019 Patriot Games hosted by George Mason University. Masteran came home in a time of 8:36.75, surpassing the previous mark of 8:39.18 set back in 2014.
