INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 6 Salisbury University softball team has not only earned an at-large selection to the 2015 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament, but has been picked as one of 16 regional tournament hosts, the organization announced on Monday morning.
Salisbury will hit the field this weekend, hosting No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan College and McDaniel College in a three-team regional. Competition begins on Friday, May 8 with each team playing the other two that day, beginning with Salisbury and McDaniel taking the field at 11 a.m. McDaniel and Virginia Wesleyan play at 1:30 p.m., while the Sea Gulls and Marlins close out the day at 4 p.m.
The regional concludes on Saturday with one or two games, depending on the number of teams remaining following Friday's first day.
The Sea Gulls (30-6) will be making the program's 20th overall NCAA tournament appearance and the seventh straight. Salisbury has advanced to the NCAA championship eight times, including the past two seasons.
The Marlins enter the tournament with a 29-6 record, after claiming the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular-season title, but falling in the ODAC tournament. The Sea Gulls have met Virginia Wesleyan 57 times with Salisbury holding a 42-15 edge in the all-time series. The squads faced off in an early-season doubleheader in 2015, splitting the games with Salisbury winning 1-0 and the Marlins claiming a 3-1 victory.
The Green Terror (29-10) earned the Centennial Conference's automatic qualification into the NCAA tournament with a 2-1 win over Gettysburg College in the Centennial championship game on Sunday. Salisbury and McDaniel have met 18 times with the Sea Gulls holding a 14-6 edge in the all-time series, but have not met since the 2012 season.
The winner of this weekend's double-elimination event will advance to an NCAA super regional next weekend, against the advancing team from the Newport News, Virginia regional, which is being hosted by Christopher Newport University.
The teams are all eying a spot in the NCAA championship, which will be contested in Salem, Virginia on May 21-26.
