Spangler wins twice as men's tennis falls to No. 21 Mary Washington

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's tennis team took its first Capital Athletic Conference loss of the 2016 season on Wednesday afternoon, falling to No. 21 University of Mary Washington, 7-2, at the SU Tennis Courts.

The Sea Gulls dropped two points in doubles play to the Eagles, picking up the win at No. 1 from seniors Eric Spangler and Shanon Gunther with a 9-7 victory. After Spangler and Gunther were ahead 5-2, the Mary Washington duo of Brandon Griffin and Matt Miles came back to take the lead at 6-5. The SU pair then broke back again to gain a 7-5 lead until finally taking the match with a huge service game for the victory.

At the No. 2 spot junior Grant Hudson and sophomore Kelson Weber fell 8-1, and at No. 3 junior Michael Popielski and freshman Andrew Rainger dropped an 8-2 decision.

The Eagles (12-6, 5-0 CAC) took the victory with the first three singles matches off the court. Popielski fell at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 Rainger dropped another 6-0, 6-0 match, and Hudson gave up a 6-3, 6-0 deciding match at the No. 3 spot.  

Weber, at No. 4 singles, had a long match. After being down 4-1 in the second set he fought to gain three more games until ultimately falling 6-1, 6-4. Gunther at the No. 2 spot, and last on the court, took a loss with a deciding third set tiebreak, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4.

At No. 1 singles, Spangler took away the lone singles point of the day for the Gulls (6-6, 1-1 CAC) with an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win. In the second set, Spangler was down 3-0 before coming back to win the next six games.

The Sea Gulls will return to action on Saturday, April 2 against York College of Pennsylvania, with the match starting at 1 p.m.
