Burtzlaff, Thomas fall on opening day of NCAA championships

OBERLIN, Ohio – Salisbury University seniors Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) and Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) made one last road trip as Sea Gull teammates heading to Oberlin College for the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships.

The pair qualified in the doubles tournament, drawing the team of Nick Ballou and Andrew Guiffrida from Cal Lutheran College, one of the top teams, in the opening round. It marked the second time this season that the teams had met. When Salisbury made its spring trip to California, Ballou and Guiffrida claimed an 8-5 win.

Unfortunately, Friday's match ended with the same winner as Ballou/Guiffrida earned the win, 6-2, 6-4. Burtzlaff and Thomas close out their Salisbury career with a 41-14 doubles record when paired together.

Burtzlaff also qualified for the singles draw, which began on Friday, but the senior saw the same fate, falling to Brian Pybas from the University of California Santa Cruz, 6-1, 6-4. Burtzlaff's career singles mark will finish at 47-33.
