SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Salisbury University men's tennis team moved up two spots in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III national poll as the Sea Gulls are ranked No. 19 in the nation. The Sea Gulls (14-7) recently finished their season as they advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference championship and fell 6-3 to No. 18 University of Mary Washington.
Middlebury College still remains the No. 1 team in the country. Emory University is currently ranked No. 2, with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College one spot behind at No. 3. California Lutheran University and Amherst College round out the top five at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
The Salisbury's men's tennis team is ranked No. 6 in the Atlantic South region while the women's team is ranked No. 8. The doubles team of Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) and Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) is currently ranked No. 1 in the region. Burtzlaff is ranked as the No. 8 singles player in the Atlantic South region. The women are also represented individually in the region, with senior Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) the No. 12 singles player in the region and she pairs with freshman Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) as the No. 5 doubles team.
The tennis teams are awaiting the announcement of the NCAA Division III Tennis Championship tournament fields to see if they receive a bid.
