YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University men’s and women’s tennis teams have had great success on the courts lately. On Tuesday, two Sea Gulls were recognized for their outstanding performances as they were named Capital Athletic Conference Tennis Athletes of the Week.
On the men’s side, sophomore Daniel Barnas (La Plata, Md.) was a major contributing factor in No. 21-ranked Salisbury’s upset of No. 13-ranked Kalamazoo College on March 27. Barnas, along with junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) comprised the No. 2 doubles team and battled to the finish against their opponents to eventually capture the 9-7 victory. That win would tip the scales in the Sea Gulls’ favor as they narrowly defeated Kalamazoo, 5-4, on the day.
On the women’s side, freshman Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) was unstoppable in singles play last week as she posted a perfect 6-0 record against three CAC opponents: St. Mary’s (Md.) College, Hood College and Stevenson University. Additionally, the doubles team of Poppe and senior Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) went 3-0 for the weekend, adding to the womens' perfect overall 10-0 record (4-0 CAC).
The men’s team’s next contest will be on the road, against Hampden-Sydney College, on April 2 at 3 p.m. The women will also be on the road for their next match, against CAC opponent University of Mary Washington, on April 7 at 4 p.m.
