SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men’s and women’s tennis programs experienced a full day of matches on Sunday, as the Sea Gulls took five matches out of five. The men’s team played matches against Christopher Newport University and conference foes Hood College and Stevenson University. The women’s tennis team swept Hood and Stevenson.
The men’s team (10-4, 4-0 CAC) played 27 matches in one day, winning 22 of them. In doubles action the duo of seniors Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) and Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.), ranked third in the Atlantic South Region, won two matches. The two swept their match against Stevenson and defeated their CNU opponents 9-8 and 7-3. The team of junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) and sophomore Daniel Barnas (La Plata, Md.) won both of their matches, as they defeated CNU 8-2 and Stevenson 8-1. Sophomores Kyle Schneck (Annapolis, Md.) and Justin Smith (New Windsor, Md.) won their third doubles match against Stevenson 8-1, and swept their second doubles match against Hood. In third doubles, Juniors Matt Copeland (Lexington Park, Md.) and Michael Rubin (Reisterstown, Md.) were successful at third doubles, as they beat their Hood counterparts 8-0. The Sea Gulls won eight of the nine doubles matches they played.
In singles action, the 21st-ranked maroon and gold were able to win 14 of 18 matches. Sophomore Arthur Jackson (Ridgely, Md.) and freshmen Henry Stuhler (Bay Head, N.J.) and Schneck received two match wins. Senior Marcus Robinson (Cambridge, Md.), freshman Evan Clifton (Bel Air, Md.) and juniors Giorgio Athans (Woolwich Township, N.J.) and Rubin each earned a singles victory. Thomas, Barnas, Nottage, and Smith each recorded one match win.
The Sea Gulls also took care of business on the women’s side. Salisbury swept both matches, as Hood and Stevenson could not win a singles match. In doubles, senior Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) and freshman Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) won both of their matches, and only gave up one game on the day. The senior duo of Rachel Iosue (Damascus, Md.) and Kelly Fahrner (Germantown, Md.) also took two matches over Hood and Stevenson. Freshman Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md.) and junior Angela Tenaglia (Clarksville, Md.) swept both of their doubles matches, not giving up a single game.
The maroon and gold did not let up in singles, as they won 12 out of 12 matches. Poppe, Tenaglia, Elaina Iosue, Victoria Handlin (Annapolis, Md.) and Rachel Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) recorded two match wins in singles. Rachel Iosue and Amy Worthington (Huntingtown, Md.) recorded one match win each.
The women’s team remains undefeated, as it boasts a 10-0 record thus far (4-0 CAC). The men’s program will return to the courts on April 2, and will take on Hampden-Sydney College in Fredericksburg, Va. The women will next play their contest, against CAC rival Mary Washington, on the road on April 7.
