SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Salisbury University men’s tennis program moved up nine spots in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III rankings. The Sea Gulls jumped from No. 30 to No. 21 and now sit two spots ahead of Capital Athletic Conference foe University of Mary Washington.
The Sea Gulls (4-4, 1-0 CAC) just returned from a Spring Break trip to California where they played No. 10 California Lutheran University, No. 12 Amherst College and No. 20 Bowdoin College.
Both the men’s and women’s teams are listed in the first regional rankings of the regular season, with the men’s team at No. 5 in the Atlantic South region and the women’s team at No. 8.
Several Salisbury student-athletes vaulted in the singles and doubles rankings, as senior Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) sits at No. 7 in the singles rankings. Burtzlaff and senior doubles partner Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) are listed as the region’s third best doubles pair. On the women’s side, the doubles pair of senior Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) and freshman Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) is currently ranked the No. 14 doubles pair in the Atlantic South region.
The men’s and women’s teams will spring back in to action this Tuesday with a pair of non-conference matches at Virginia Wesleyan College at 3 p.m.
