Sea Gull men finish fourth, women fifth in final day of CAC championships

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – On the third and final day of the Capital Athletic Conference championships on Sunday, Salisbury University's men's and women's swimming teams set two additional school records while the men finished in fourth place, 41 points behind York (Pa.) College, and the women in fifth place with 307 points. 

The men's team capped off championship weekend sending seven swimmers to championship events, five of whom had qualified during the morning preliminary rounds.

For the third consecutive day, junior Jesse Cunningham outswam his competition placing him in the top eight, qualifying for the championship heat in the 200-yard breaststroke. The North Potomac, Md., native claimed third-place, touching the wall in 2:09.09. Cunningham broke Salisbury's school record set in 2008, by Mike Ferrari, with his qualifying time of 2:09.02.

Sophomore James Gough competed in his second championship event, after swimming in the 500-freestyle on Friday. Gough put up a time of 2:01.38 in the 200-yard backstroke, good for sixth place. After breaking his own school record in the 200-yard freestyle, junior Paul Zoli entered the 100-yard freestyle with a prelim time of 48.61 seconds. The Fallston, Md., native went on to claim third-place with a time of 48.16 seconds.

In the finals of the 200-yard butterfly the maroon and gold filled two lanes with senior Jason Preston (2:05.13) and sophomore Chip Helferstay (2:08.99), who went on to claim sixth and seventh place, respectively.

The Sea Gulls had two participants in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshmen Eric Gillies (17:58.49) and Philip Kuldell (18:03.32) placed ninth and 11th, respectively, in a field of 19.

The women had their best showing on day three placing three swimmers in championship events after the morning preliminaries.

Senior Robin Stone competed in her second championship heat as she placed fifth in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 2:13.60.

For the first time freshman Taylor Merget participated in an individual championship race as she qualified for the 100-yard freestyle. Merget went on to finish in eighth place with a time of 56.39 seconds. Junior Sarah Ault also qualified for her first individual championship race of the weekend in the 200-yard butterfly where she hit the wall in 2:19.50, claiming eighth place.

Seniors Kara Morrill and Katie Stamm (20:23.38) along with junior Christine Cook (19:48.75) took part in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle. Morrill lead the trio hitting the wall ninth in a time of 19:04.07.

Salisbury continued its success in team relay events breaking its fifth school relay record in the men's 400-yard freestyle relay. Cunningham was first off the block while seniors Steve Eyler and Joe Wisda swam the second and third legs. Zoli anchored the team touching the wall third with a time of 3:12.85, half a second separated second and third-place.

The Sea Gull men finish the 2012 season with an overall record of 4-6 (3-3 CAC), while the women finish with an overall record of 3-7 (2-4 CAC).
