SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team opened Capital Athletic Conference play with a 1-0 win against Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon.
Ryan Spadin had a great opportunity to put the Sea Gulls (8-1-1, 1-0 CAC) up 1-0 in the 13th minute, but his header was stopped short of the goal line by a Frostburg State (3-7-1, 0-1 CAC) defender.
Spadin capitalized shortly after in the 16th minute, however, ripping a shot into the back of the net after receiving a pass in the middle of the box from Matt Hawkins, who made a long run down the left sideline.
The Sea Gulls took the 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Bobcats 6-3 while allowing just one shot on goal.
Gutoskey had a quality opportunity himself in the 82nd minute on a shot from just outside the 18, forcing the Frostburg State goalkeeper to make a diving save.
The Sea Gulls controlled possession throughout much of the game, but the Bobcats had one last chance to tie it in the 87th minute. Cameron Coates had an open look at goal from the right side, but Trent Hofmeister slid in to block his shot and secure the win.
Salisbury has off until next Saturday, October 6, when it travels to take on Penn State University-Harrisburg at 12 p.m.
