Men's soccer falls 1-0 to Catholic on second-half goal

SALISBURY Md. - The No. 20 Salisbury University men's soccer team hosted Catholic University of America and fell 1-0 to the Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon at the SU Soccer Complex.

The game opened up with Catholic controlling much of the possession and Salisbury aggressively pressuring the ball, while Catholic had six shots in the first 15 minutes.

Salisbury then got control of the game and had several great chances to score. In the 32nd minute, Salisbury was awarded a penalty kick after a Catholic yellow card in the box. Michael Feeney got the chance at the kick and put the shot just over the crossbar to keep the game in a scoreless tie.

Just three minutes later, Leslie Umunna showcased his dribbling abilities as he went down the left side of the field in Cardinal territory and worked his way through defenders until he was one on one with the keeper to the left of the net and just off the end line. Umunna got the keeper to move out of position and show a sliver of the net, but with his sharp angle, Umunna hit the post.

In the 55th minute, Catholic's Ben Sykes got a shot off that senior keeper Drew Staedeli turned aside for the Sea Gulls. However, the rebound took a Catholic bounce and went directly to Tyler Zimmerman, who put it in for his third goal of the season.

Salisbury's best chance to get the goal back came in the 62nd minute when Tyler Andrus – who got the first start of his career in the game – ripped a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box that looked like the equalizer but, instead, rang off the left post.

In the end, Catholic's lone tally would be all it would need to take the win. Catholic would hold the edge in shots, 18-16, while Salisbury had six corners to Catholic's two.

Staedeli finished the game with six saves. The six saves for Staedeli makes it the eighth time this season he has made at least five saves. Also it brings him to 48 saves on the season, just 13 shy of the 61 he put up in the entire 2014 season.

The Sea Gulls return to action this weekend as they travel to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on Southern Virginia University in Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday, October 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
