KANSAS CITY, Kan. – With its first game of the season just three weeks away, the Salisbury University men's soccer team received word Friday afternoon that it will begin the 2014 campaign as the No. 19 team in the country, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Sea Gulls concluded last season with an 18-4 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament where they fell to the defending national champion, Messiah College. Going undefeated in the Capital Athletic Conference for the fifth time in program history, Salisbury advanced to its 17th league championship.
At the top of the preseason poll is Messiah, followed by Rutgers University-Camden at No. 2, which was defeated by the Falcons in the 2013 national championship game. The Sea Gulls are joined by CAC-foe York College of Pennsylvania in the top 20, as the Spartans were placed 11th to start the year.
The season kicks off for the men on August 29, as Salisbury hosts the annual Elmer Lord Soccer Classic at the SU Soccer Complex. The Sea Gulls are set to compete against Patrick Henry College Friday at 3 p.m., followed by the State University of New York at Brockport on Saturday at 2 p.m.
