HIGHLIGHT VIDEO: No. 2 Salisbury vs. No. 19 Lynchburg
The second-ranked Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament behind an 18-10 victory over No. 19 University of Lynchburg at Sea Gull Stadium on May 11. After Salisbury fell behind 2-0 in the opening minutes of the first quarter the maroon and gold outscored the visiting Hornets 10-3 for the remainder of the first half led by Zach Pompea. Pompea finished as the Sea Gulls leader in points with five netting two goals and dishing out three assists. He had a hand in four of the first five goals scored by the Sea Gulls including the first three of the contest. After an initial back-and-forth battle to start off the action the game reached a turning point late in the second quarter when Salisbury scored three goals in the final 48 seconds of the first half. After Emory Wongus helped push the Salisbury advantage to 8-5 flags against both teams landed players in the box but Lynchburg was hit with a one-minute non-releasable unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Pompea and Corey Gwin each score in the half’s final 20 seconds to push the lead to 10-5 and swing momentum fully in favor of the home squad. Brandon Warren anchored a strong defensive performance as he finished the night with 10 saves in just under 54 minutes of work. The defensive unit caused seven turnovers led by Kevin Murphy’s three. Salisbury returns to action on Wednesday, May 15 when it hosts Denison University in the Quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. This will be the third time since 2014 that these two programs have met in the tournament and second time in the quarterfinals.
