Sea Gulls stumble against No. 3 York

SALISBURY, Md. – The top ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team was upended on Wednesday night by No. 3 York College of Pennsylvania in a crucial top-five and Capital Athletic Conference showdown, 11-9. The Sea Gulls led just one time in the contest and struggled to generate a consistent offensive attack throughout.

Josh Melton helped keep Salisbury (14-1, 3-1 CAC) in the game throughout, as he finished with a team-best four goals while scoring in three of the four quarters.

Corey Gwin opened the scoring for the evening, netting his only marker of the night to give the home team a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest on a man-up tally. However, York (14-1, 5-0) answered right back, netting two goals in 30 seconds to take a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans continued their offensive explosion in the second frame outscoring Salisbury 5-2, including a 4-0 run over the span of four minutes. Melton netted his second marker of night late in the second to break up the scoring spree and end an almost seven minute scoring draught for the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury fought back in the second half, outscoring the visiting team 3-1 in the third quarter, including two goals from Melton. His first marker came less than three minutes into the action when he finished off one of three Tyler Snyder assists for the night before closing out the frame on an unassisted effort to cut the deficit to just two, 9-7.

However, the two teams traded goals in the final 15 minutes of action as the Spartans held Salisbury off the board in the final 3:12.

Brett Malamphy was dominant from the faceoff x winning 17-of-24 faceoffs while scooping up a team-best eight groundballs.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, April 20 when it hosts Southern Virginia University for both Senior Day and Lax 4 Leukemia Youth Day. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
