STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Salisbury University men's basketball program opened day one of the Tournament of Heroes at the College of Staten Island with a victory over the host Dolphins, 93-75. The Sea Gulls used career-high performances from Chad Barcikowski and Johnny Fierstein while defensively causing 21 turnovers and recording 12 steals to earn the win.
Barcikowski turned in his best performance of the season totaling a career-high 29 points to help lead the maroon and gold to victory. He went 9-of-14 from the field including a 5-of-6 performance from behind the three-point arc totaling a three-point shooting percentage of 83 percent.
Fierstein posted his best performance thus far in the maroon and gold totaling 22 points on a 61 percent shooting night from the field. It is also Fierstein's first double-digit shooting performance of the season surpassing his season-high by 19 points.
Barcikowski netted 13 points in the opening 20 minutes of action while Fierstein knocked down three of his eight total baskets to help Salisbury jump out to 47-42 advantage at the break. As a team Salisbury knocked down 53.6 percent of its shots from the field in the first half while going 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The defense clamped down in the second half holding the College of Staten Island to a shooting percentage of 41.7 from the field, which was a 10 percent difference than in the first half. The defense also used 11 Dolphin turnovers, seven steals, and two blocks in the final 20 minutes of action to help preserve the win.
Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, December 30 when it takes on The State University of New York at Oneonta in the championship game. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 3:00 p.m.
