Sea Gulls picked by coaches to finish fifth in the CAC

YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference released its 2013-14 men's basketball preseason rankings and the coaches from around the league picked the Salisbury University men's basketball team to finish fifth in the conference, the league announced Thursday.

Head Coach Josh Merkel is looking to guide the Sea Gulls to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 2000-01 season after finishing last season 19-8 and 9-3 in conference play. The 19 wins were the most for a Salisbury team since the 1995-96 team led by Hall of Fame coach Ward Lambert.

St. Mary's College of Maryland was the unanimous choice at the top of the rankings with 81 points. The Seahawks enter the season ranked No. 10 in the preseason poll.

Conference newcomer Christopher Newport University was picked to finish second in the poll following a 22-6 season. Wesley College garnered 61 points to sit third in the rankings. Mary Washington, a CAC finalist a season ago, was picked fourth with 57 points, just two points ahead of the Sea Gulls.
