Benedetti to play in Tazón de Estrellas in Mexico

GRANBURY, Texas – Salisbury University superback Joe Benedetti has been selected as one of 44 NCAA Division III seniors to represent Team Stars & Stripes in the fourth annual Tazón de Estrellas played at La Fortaleza Azul against the CONADEIP All-Stars in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Team Stars & Stripes Director of Player Personnel John Roslien has chosen players from 26 schools who were nominated by Division III head coaches for the game, organized by Global Football. Under Head Coach Don De Waard – the defensive coordinator at Central College – the Americans will look to avenge a 45-27 loss suffered last year at the hands of the home team drawn from the CONADEIP national conference of private schools in Mexico.

Benedetti earned 2012 All-Empire 8 Second Team honors after becoming Head Coach Sherman Wood's eighth 1,000-yard rusher in his 14 years at SU. Benedetti had 1,126 yards and 12 touchdowns on 187 attempts. He ran for a career-high 216 yards and four scores in a season-opening win at Christopher Newport University on Sept. 1, being named Beyond Sports Network Division III Running Back of the Week for his efforts.

A Langhorne, Pa., native, Benedetti finished his career with 1,669 yards rushing and 17 TDs, averaging 6.1 yards per carry in 40 games.

Salisbury (9-3) advanced to its third consecutive NCAA tournament in 2012, falling in the second round at Widener University, 28-7.
