INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 12 Salisbury University football team clinched an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III football tournament a week ago, and closed out a nine-win regular season with a 49-7 win against Frostburg State University on Saturday. All that was left was waiting for the official announcement of the tournament bracket on Sunday evening to find out who the Sea Gulls would play in the opening round and where the game would take place.
Salisbury (9-1) got both answers as Sea Gull Stadium will play host to an NCAA tournament football game for the first time since the 2004 season this coming Saturday, Nov. 19, as SU will host Western New England University. Saturday's kickoff is scheduled for noon.
This will be Salisbury's eighth NCAA tournament appearance and second consecutive.
Western New England (10-1) will be making its first appearance in the NCAA tournament after defeating Framingham State University, 20-13 in overtime, to claim the New England Football Conference championship.
The game will mark the first meeting between the two programs in football.
The winner will advance to the second round of the tournament, to take on the winner of Kean University and Christopher Newport University. CNU was the last team to come to Sea Gull Stadium for a football playoff game, defeating the Gulls, 35-24, on Nov. 20, 2004.
Fellow Empire 8 Conference member St. John Fisher College received an at-large bid to the tournament field, and will travel to Johns Hopkins University for a first-round game.
