Baseball drops CAC opener at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University baseball team dropped its Capital Athletic Conference opener on Friday afternoon at Christopher Newport University, 10-3.

The Captains (16-4, 1-0 CAC) took a 5-0 lead through five innings, scoring three times in the third and two more run in the fifth, though just two of the opening runs were earned against starting pitcher Austin Heenan.

Salisbury (9-5, 0-1 CAC) cut into the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, beginning the frame with three straight hits. Justin Meekins and Kyle Canavan started with singles before Jack Barry drove in the Sea Gulls' first run with an RBI single to right-center field.

After two outs, Scott Ardoin drove a ball through the left side, scoring Canavan and Matt Padeway's chopper through the right side scored Barry, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

The Captains came up with five more runs off the Salisbury bullpen in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

Canavan was 2-for-3 in the game for Salisbury, while Barry went 2-for-4 to lead the offensive push.

Heenan went six innings for Salisbury, walking only one while striking out seven in the game.

The Sea Gulls return home on Saturday, March 24, hosting Southern Virginia University in a CAC doubleheader at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium beginning at noon.
