MOOSIC, Pa. – The No. 10 Salisbury University baseball team fell on Wednesday afternoon in the first day of action in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament, 7-1, to Kean University at PNC Field in Moosic, Pennsylvania.
After a scoreless first inning that only featured one base runner, Kean took the lead in the second, 1-0, on an RBI ground out by Matt Meleo.
The Cougars continued to add to their lead in the third and fourth innings, with one run in each frame for a 3-0 edge. Sal Taormina collected an RBI single in the third, and Chris Amato singled to drive in the fourth-inning run.
Salisbury got on the board to cut into the deficit in their half of the fourth. Junior Pete Grasso singled into right field for his second hit of the game, before stealing second to get into scoring position. He then came home on a single up the middle off the bat of senior Tyler Hrycak to make the score 3-1.
After two scoreless innings, Taormina hit a home run in the seventh to bump the Cougars' lead back to three, 4-1, before Kean put together a three-run eighth to get to the final score and go on to the win.
Grasso led the team with his two hits, while Hrycak added a 1-for-4 day with the RBI.
The Sea Gulls will take the field again on Thursday, May 19 in the second day of the Mid-Atlantic Regional in an elimination game at 1:15 p.m. Salisbury will take on the loser of the final game of day one between Salve Regina University and St. John Fisher College.
