Women take top spot, men finish third at Fall Classic

The Salisbury University men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in their first run of 2018, hosting the Salisbury University Fall Classic on Saturday with the women’s team winning the event and the men placing third. The women won the Fall Classic seeing its first five runners finish in the top eight spots, led by freshman Catie Cambon who took second place in a time of 23:31. She finished just second seconds ahead of junior Ashley Mazer. A trio of Sea Gulls rounded out the top five spots for the home squad, with Christine Sturm leading the small pack, placing sixth in 23:56 while Carly Sniffen and Liana Foianini were just one second behind, finishing side by side. The men’s race saw a third-place finish with Conner Masteran leading the way. He ran near the front for the entire length of the 8,000 meters and finished strong, coming in a narrow second place behind Rowan’s Matt Russo. Masteran finished in 25:48. Mason Kimbell picked up a sixth-place finish, coming home in 26:39. While Emmanuel Porquin was good for a 12th-place run in 27:09. Jack Finnerin and Carter Williams placed fourth and fifth, respectively, while Nick Plummer made a strong run to the finish, coming up with this late pass on a Rowan runner for the Sea Gulls’ seventh runner across. The Sea Gulls next head to the DII/DIII Challenge hosted by Kutztown University on September 15.
