YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference men's and women's cross country polls were announced on Monday, with the Salisbury University men's team receiving two first-place votes and 65 points to finish third in the poll, while the women's team was voted into a tie for fourth with Marymount (Va.) University with 49 points.
The Sea Gull men, who finished third in the CAC last season, will be looking for their 10th conference title this season. The Gulls will be led by senior Jeremy Skarda and junior Thomas Burke, as both runners were named second-team All-CAC athletes in each of the past two seasons.
Salisbury is joined in the preseason top three by No. 1 Christopher Newport University (77 points and five first-place votes) and, 2013 conference champion, No. 2 York College of Pennsylvania (70 points and three first-place votes). CNU finished second in the conference last season between the Spartans and the Sea Gulls.
The Salisbury women's team will look to senior Olivia Cloud to provide veteran leadership as the Sea Gulls' top returning runner from 2013.
Looking to improve upon last season's sixth-place finish in the conference championships, the Gulls enter 2014 in the preseason top-five teams with No. 1 CNU (75 points and four first-place votes), No. 2 York (74 points and four first-place votes), and No. 3 University of Mary Washington (70 points and two first-place votes), while being tied with Marymount at No. 4.
Salisbury begins its season on Saturday, hosting the Salisbury University Fall Classic at Winter Place Park, with the events beginning at 9:45 a.m.
