Early and Jones garner individual honors, seven Sea Gulls collect all-conference honors
YORK, Pa - The Salisbury University women's cross country team received some good news Thursday as seven student-athletes garnered all-conference honors. In addition, SU freshman Jessie Early (Mardela Springs, Md.) was named CAC Rookie of the Year and head coach Jim Jones was named CAC Women's Coach of the Year. Early is just the fourth SU women's runner to receive the accolade, while it is the third time Jones has received the honor.
Early showed up strong in the CAC Championship this past weekend, placing 12th with a time of 25:50.51, to earn her Rookie of the Year award.
The Sea Gulls had three student-athletes garner first team all-conference accolades and four collect second team honors. Salisbury University juniors Jennifer Musemeci (Beachwood, N.J.) and Kristin Stromberg (Hampstead, Md.) were each named to the All-CAC first team. This marks the third time in Stromberg's career that she has been named to the all-conference team, as she was a first team representative in ‘08 and second teamer in '07. Her 2009 award comes due to a second-place finish in the CAC Championship last weekend, finishing in a time of 24:48.46 while Musemeci finished the championship run in fourth place with a time of 24:57.67. SU sophomore Becca Stinner (Darnestown, Md.) was also named to the first team after placing sixth at the CAC meet, with a time of 25:13.63. The pair led their team to a sixth CAC Championship.
SU juniors Masha Berge (Potomac, Md.) and Megan Blue (Toms River, N.J.) were each named to the second team. Berge placed eighth in the CAC Championship with a time of 25:31.28. This also marks the third straight season that Berge has collected all-conference honors, as she was a first teamer in '08 and second teamer in '07. Sophomore Emily Powell (Mt. Airy, Md.) and Early rounded out the second-team all-conference honors for the Gulls. Powell finished 10th in the CAC meet last weekend, with a time of 25:39.94.
The Sea Gull women's cross country team is fresh off its CAC Championship which it captured over the weekend in Walkersville, Md. It was the second straight year and sixth overall time in program history the women's cross country team has won the CAC Championship.
