SU men finish third, women seventh at Waynesburg Invitational

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Salisbury University men's and women's cross country teams competed in their first road meet of the season as they ran in the Waynesburg Invitational on  Saturday morning. The men's and women's teams each earned top seven finishes on the day against tough fields.

Salisbury placed third out of 13 teams in the men's 8K race as the team earned 83 points. The Sea Gulls missed second place by two points as Messiah College scored 81 points. Allegheny College won the meet with the lowest score, 27 points.

The men's five point scorers were SU sophomore Sam Boimov (sixth), junior Travis Boccher (eighth), seniors Zack Dickerson (13th) and Ben Thomas (26th), and freshman Trevor Keen (32nd).

Boimov led the Sea Gulls in their opening race of the season and out-did himself today with a time of 26:05, 54 seconds faster than his time at the Sea Gull Opener. Boccher and Dickerson pushed each other hard as they finished 10 seconds apart with times of 26:48 and 26:58, respectively.

On the women's side, the maroon and gold placed seventh out of 15 teams as they earned 158 points in the 6K race. Senior Amy DeMichele led the way for SU with a 12th place finish with a time of 24:03, while sophomores Masha Berge (24:42) and Kristin Stromberg (24:53) placed 23rd and 30th, respectively. Freshmen Becca Stinner (25:51) and Emily Powell (26:04) rounded out the top-five for the maroon and gold with 49th and 54th performances.

The Sea Gulls' trip to Waynesburg, Pa., may be considered a practice run for Salisbury as the Sea Gulls return on November 15 for the NCAA Mideast Regional hosted by Waynesburg University.

SU is off next week and will next host the annual Don Cathcart Invitational at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, Md., on September 27th at 10 a.m.
