YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference
officially announced its 2008 all-conference men's and women's
cross country teams and conference champion Salisbury University
placed 11 runners on the teams. This season's additions give the SU
cross country program over 125 combined (men's and women's) All-CAC
honorees since the 1995 season. SU joined the conference in 1993
for cross country.
The men's team claimed its fourth consecutive CAC championship
this season and landed seven members on the postseason honor roll.
Sophomore Chris Barnard (Olney, Md./Sherwood),
junior Travis Boccher (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake),
sophomore Sam Boimov (Montgomery Village,
Md./Gaithersburg), senior Zack Dickerson
(Elkridge, Md./Howard) and junior Bill Nastasiak
(Pt. Pleasant, N.J./Ocean C.C.) earned first-team All-CAC
honors.
Dickerson and Barnard made repeat appearances this season as both
were members of the 2007 All-CAC first team. Two Sea Gull runners
made their second All-CAC appearances as Nastasiak was a member of
the 2006 All-CAC second team and Boimov earned a spot on last
season's second-team.
Salisbury claimed all but two spots on the first team as University
of Mary Washington's Frank DeVar (Men's Athlete of the Year) and
Brian Fulton completed the squad. Dickerson also was named CAC
Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week twice during the season
(October 14 and September 30).
Junior Dustin Yourstone (Ellicott City,
Md./Centennial) and freshman John Fitzgerald
(Baltimore Md./Calvert Hall) earned second team honors this year.
Yourstone's appearance marked his second All-CAC honor for his
career as he earned a spot on the first team in '06.
Head coach Jim Jones was also named the CAC Men's
Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season and
his seventh overall in his 10 seasons at SU. Jones has twice
been named the CAC Women's Coach of the Year. Mary Washington's
Justin Mullen was named the CAC Men's Rookie of the Year. Jones has
coached 61 All-CAC men's honorees since he took over at the helm in
1999.
On the women's side, the 2008 CAC cross country champions
Salisbury University had four runners finish in the top seven at
the conference championship on November 1 to earn first team
honors. The Sea Gull honorees include seniors Jenn
Bulger (Verona, N.J./Verona) and Amy
DeMichele (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) along with sophomores
Masha Berge (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and
Kristin Stromberg (Hampstead, Md./Delone
Catholic).
This is the third All-CAC honor for Bulger (first team in '06,
second team in '07), who was also CAC Women's Runner of the Week
for October 14. Berge, DeMichele and Stromberg made an improvement
from their All-CAC second team honors last season.
Stromberg's first All-CAC honor came as no surprise as she led the
way for SU in the championship race against Mary Washington at the
Indian Acres Club hosted by University of Mary Washington and was
an integral part of the maroon and gold's success.
Coach Jones has had 38 Sea Gulls earn All-CAC women's honors
under his tutelage.
Mary Washington's Hayley Sullivan was named the 2008 CAC Women's
Athlete of the Year while Eagle coach Stan Soper received his 10th
CAC Women's Coach of the Year. York (Pa.) College freshman Corie
Thompson was named CAC Women's Rookie of the Year.
