2001 Season Review

The 2001 Salisbury University men's and women's cross country teams continued its dominance of the Capital Athletic Conference as the teams each finished in the top-3 to punch a pair of tickets to the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional meet. A total of eight Sea Gulls were named to the All-CAC teams.

The maroon and gold opened up the year with a third place finish in the Sea Gull Opener before racing in the Lebanon Valley and New York University Invitationals, where the Sea Gulls placed sixth and 19th, respectively. The squad would then reel off two consecutive second place finishes before winning the Goucher Invitational. SU would again place second in two consecutive meets beginning with the Mason-Dixon Conference Championship, which was hosted at Winter Place Park. The Sea Gulls had four runners finish in the top-15 to pick up a second place in the CAC Championships before placing 15th in the NCAA Mideast Regional. The men ended the year with a record of 105-43 (.709 winning percentage).

Leading the charge for SU in 2001 was junior Andy Marrocco, who was named to the All-CAC first team after placing in second (28:04) at the conference championships. The Sewell, N.J., native also collected first team honors in the Mason-Dixon Conference after he led SU with a sixth place finish (27:29). Marrocco was the only Sea Gull to be named to the All-Maryland State team when he finished in 10th place of the race to take home second team laurels. Junior Jeremy Beall finished just 32 seconds behind Marrocco at the CAC Championships to finish in seventh placs (28:36) to join him on the All-CAC first team. SU had three others collect All-CAC second team honors in freshman Will Detweiler, freshman Justin Marvel, and sophomore Steve Jocobs. The three runners solidified the pack for SU in the CAC Championships as they finished ninth, tenth, and eleventh, respectively. The Sea Gulls were also paced by freshman Brad Ellis, who was named to the All-Mason-Dixon Conference second team after placing 11th in a time of 27:57.

The Salisbury women began the season at home when they finished in third at the Sea Gull opener. SU would then place seventh at the Lebanon Valley Invitational before claiming a 17th place finish at the New York University Invitiational. The women would pick up the pace in their next race when they finished in third at the Tidewater Fall Classic. The success gathered from the meet transferred over to its next four meets as the Sea Gulls finished no lower than fourth in any of them. The women's third place finish at the CAC Championships produced a spot into the Mideast Regional where they finished 17th among 34 total teams. The women concluded the year with a 96-50-2 record (.658 winning percentage).

The women provided a total team effort over the course of the season. Junior Kristin Camp put together a number of quality races including the CAC Championships where she was SU's top finisher with a 10th place effort. Her time of 21:14 gave her a spot on the All-CAC second team. She was also named to the All-Mason-Dixon Conference second team when she finished in 11th (20:44). Sophomore Rebecca Lyons also ran well for the Sea Gulls as she was named to the All-CAC second team as well (11th, 21:21). Lyons was SU's top finisher at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships (sixth, 20:02). The strong showing provided her with a first team spot. Freshman Kelsey Scheitlin finished in seventh (20:03) at the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships to collect second team laurels. She also ran well at the CAC Championships with a 15th place finish (21:34) to be named to the All-CAC second team.
