Stouffer's 18 kills leads Sea Gulls past Knights

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Salisbury University volleyball team earned its fourth Capital Athletic Conference victory on Saturday, defeating Southern Virginia University 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-22) on the road.

Salisbury came out strong on an 11-2 run. Senior Kacey Franz tallied the first point on a kill, while junior Katie Stouffer notched four kills in the opening stretch. Freshman Kelly Surkovich tallied two service aces to help lead the run.

Kills from juniors Jordan Lawson and Shannon Russell helped build the lead to 14-3, and the Sea Gulls kept up the strong set, taking a 14-point advantage after a block by Stouffer and sophomore Samantha Chubb, 22-8.

Lawson put down the final kill to cap the set and take the 1-0 lead.

The Gulls got off to a fast start again in the second game, as Stouffer tallied four kills in the first five points, and Lawson hit two kills to help the team open on another 11-2 spurt.

The Knights fought back with a 10-5 run to cut Salisbury's lead to four, but Stouffer tallied another kill, while several Southern Virginia errors helped the Sea Gulls keep their lead, 21-13. Stouffer finished the match with 18 kills to lead the team.

Junior Colleen White and Russell each tallied kills in the final points, as Salisbury took the 2-0 lead.

The final set began on a 5-2 stretch for the Gulls, with Stouffer tallying two kills.

The Knights kept the score closer in the third set, tying the game 5-5. Kills from junior Kirby Given and Lawson regained the lead for Salisbury 10-7.

Lawson and Stouffer tallied another kill each, as the Sea Gulls pushed their advantage to 18-15, but the Knights again fought back with a 6-1 run to take their first lead, 21-19.

Russell and Stouffer put together back-to-back kills to tie the score, 21-21, and Salisbury ended on a 4-1 run, as Stouffer hit her final kill to cap the win.

Russell and Lawson finished the match with eight and seven kills, respectively. Surkovich led the defense with 15 digs, and sophomore Rachel Pierson led with 22 assists. Russell also added 10 digs in the match.

Salisbury returns home on Wednesday, October 21 for a CAC match with Penn State University-Harrisburg at Maggs Physical Activities Center. The match is set for 7 p.m.
