Salisbury opens Buttermaker Tournament with two 3-0 victories

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Salisbury University volleyball team opened the Buttermaker Tournament at Muhlenberg College on Friday night with 3-0 wins over Rowan University (25-18, 25-7, 25-13) and Moravian College (25-20, 26-24, 25-17).

Salisbury 3, Rowan 0 (25-18, 25-7, 25-13)

The Sea Gulls took the first match behind strong efforts from junior Katie Stouffer, sophomore Samantha Chubb, and freshman Nicole Venturelli.

Stouffer led the team with 15 kills, and Chubb added six, while they each notched four total blocks, with three solo.

Venturelli finished second with nine kills, and classmate Kelly Surkovich paced the team with 13 digs for a career high. Surkovich also added three service aces to lead the squad.

Sophomore Alexis Howatt handled the setting for the Gulls, leading with 30 assists.

Salisbury 3, Moravian 0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-17)

Stouffer and Venturelli again paired to lead the Sea Gulls to their second victory of the evening, leading the team with 19 and 18 kills, respectively. Stouffer led the team with four total blocks, notching two solo and two assisted.

Sophomore Rachel Pierson led with 27 assists in the match, while Surkovich continued her strong defensive day to lead the team with nine digs.

Salisbury showed a balanced defense, as Venturelli notched seven digs, senior Kacey Franz tallied six, and juniors Jordan Lawson and Shannon Russell each added five.

The Sea Gulls continue the Buttermaker Tournament on Saturday, September 12, taking on host Muhlenberg at 12 p.m., to begin the day.
