SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team used a 3-1 victory over York College of Pennsylvania (25-15, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon at Maggs Physical Activities Center for its third Capital Athletic Conference win, as the Sea Gulls celebrated the careers of seniors Nikki Binetti, Michelle Meehan, and Julie Poston before the match for Senior Day.
The Sea Gulls jumped out to a quick four-point lead in the first set on kills from sophomore Shannon Russell, Poston, and sophomore Katie Stouffer, followed by a service ace from Russell; it was the first kill of 20 on the day for Poston, who led the team in the match.
York answered with a 4-0 run of its own to tie the score, but three kills from Stouffer for SU's next three points sparked a 7-3 run to build the lead to 11-7.
After the Spartans again cut the lead, making it 11-10, two-straight Russell kills ignited the Sea Gull offense for an 8-1 spurt, capped by two-consecutive service aces by freshman Rachel Pierson.
With the eight-point advantage, SU cruised to the 1-0 lead, as Poston closed the set with a kill.
Poston then tallied two kills to start the Salisbury scoring in the second frame, as the Gulls again took an early lead, this time 8-3.
York again answered with a run to cut the advantage to 10-9, before coming back to take a 16-15 lead in the set.
Despite the Spartans' lead never reaching more than two, before the final point, the Sea Gulls dropped the set without regaining a lead.
With the help of kills from Stouffer and Binetti in an initial 4-0 run, the third set began with another Salisbury lead at 10-3.
SU held the advantage, as two kills from Poston helped push the lead to 16-12.
Poston and Binetti both grabbed three kills in the set to lead the Gulls, as Binetti notched eight in match.
After a York error put the score at 18-14, Salisbury never led by less than four for the rest of the set, as two Russell service aces regained the match lead.
The Spartans turned the tables with a 7-1 run to take a 10-6 lead; York pushed the lead to 18-14, but five attack errors allowed SU to tie the score, 19-19.
Trailing 21-19, three-straight kills from Poston, as she tallied seven in the set, gained the first lead for Salisbury since the opening moments of the set at 22-21, forcing a Spartan timeout.
Returning from the break, Binetti tallied a kill and Russell notched her fourth service ace, setting up a match point for Stouffer to grab with her final kill; she finished the match with 11 for second on the team.
Meehan led the team with 17 digs in the match, while Pierson registered 30 assists.
Salisbury returns to action Wednesday night, October 29, as CAC foe Wesley College visits Maggs PAC for a match slated for 7 p.m.
