SU volleyball hosts second annual "Dig Pink" rally

SALISBURY, Md. - October 13 will be a very special night for the Salisbury University volleyball team, as the Sea Gulls host the Side-Out Foundation's "Dig Pink" rally. This is the second year that the maroon and gold have participated in the event, whose goal is to raise both awareness and funds for breast cancer research and prevention. This year's match will be against Gallaudet University.

Game time is set for 7 p.m., but fans are encouraged to come out early and enjoy the festivities. The first 500 people who donate $1 at the door will receive a beverage holder which bears both the Dig Pink and Salisbury University logos, donated by Athletic House. Fans who donate will also receive a ticket to be entered in a serving contest, which will take place between the second and third sets of the match. Prizes for the winners of the serving contest include gear from SU athletic teams, as well as gift cards from various local businesses. A $25 donation automatically enters a fan into the serving contest, and additional tickets can also be purchased for $1. Local businesses looking to get in on the celebration are still welcome. "We're always looking for other local businesses to help us out," said SU head coach Margie Knight.

Fans are encouraged to wear something pink to show their support for breast cancer awareness.

The Side-Out Foundation was established in 2004 to raise money and awareness about cancer through the recreational activity of volleyball. The name underscores the purpose of their organization, "Side-Out." In volleyball, a side-out occurs when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. Likewise in the war against cancer, Side-Out supports health care professionals and researchers help women and men with cancer maintain control of their own lives. This is through improved awareness, education, detection, treatment and cure, thereby enabling them to live life to the fullest.
