LEXINGTON, Ky. - As the Salisbury
University volleyball program looks to keep up its strong run in
the 2009 NCAA tournament, three SU student-athletes were honored by
the American Volleyball Coaches Association for their play during
the regular season. Senior libero Gabby Long (Bel Air,
Md.) and senior middle hitter Nicole Massarelli
(Clarksville, Md.) were each named to the Mid-Atlantic
All-Region team, and freshman middle hitter Chelsea Glowacki
(Poolesville, Md.) was named honorable mention
All-Region.
This marks the fourth consecutive season and fifth overall in
program history that the Sea Gulls have had at least one member of
the team named All-Region. SU now has 12 All-Region honors
including eight first-team honors.
This is the third-straight year that Long has been honored by
the AVCA for All-Region honors, as she was an honorable mention
performer in 2007 and first-team member in '08. Long, the team's
defensive specialist, has played in all 35 matches and was recently
named to the Capital Athletic Conference first team. For the season
Long leads the team in digs (644) and service aces (56). Long
finished second in the conference in digs and digs per set (5.28),
third in service aces (55) and fifth in service aces per set
(0.46); she set the program's career record for digs on
Oct. 13 against Gallaudet University.
This marks the first time in Massarelli's career that she has
garnered All-Region honors. The Clarksville, Md., native was also
recently named first team All-CAC. Massarelli played and started in
all 35 matches this season and led the team in sets played (124),
solo blocks (34), total blocks (141) and blocks per set (1.14). In
her four-year career, she has 1,118 kills and 443 blocks. She
also stands ninth in the CAC in hitting percentage (.247).
Massarelli collected her 1,000th career kill on Sept. 29 against
Marymount (Va.) University. She exemplifies what it means to be a
student-athlete, as the middle hitter was named to the 2009-10
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Volleyball First
Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA).
Glowacki had a breakout freshman season for the Sea Gulls in
2009 as she played and started in all 35 matches. She led the CAC,
and stands 46th in the nation, in hitting percentage (.329). The
Poolesville, Md., native is second on the team in blocks (97), and
fourth on the team in both kills (191) and points (250). Glowacki
has notched 13 kills twice this season including one in SU's CAC
semifinal match against York (Pa.) College.
