Gulls capture first tournament championship of the season

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Salisbury University volleyball team wrapped up its visit to Washington, Pa. with two wins in day two of the Washington & Jefferson Tournament to capture the top spot at the event. The victories today give the Gulls a record of 7-1 so far this season.

Salisbury started off the day by defeating St. Vincent College (5-4) in three games, 25-12, 25-16, 25-20. The Sea Gulls were led by senior outside hitter Rachel Downes (Salisbury, Md.) who tallied up a total of 22 kills and 20 digs in two matches.  Senior middle hitter Nicole Massarelli (Clarksville, Md.) also had a successful first match with four blocks. Freshman setter Carley Todd (Centerport, N.Y.) added 16 assists, also in the first match.

The Gulls then went on to the championship round where they defeated Muskingum College (6-4) in four matches, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-16. Sophomore setter Lindsey Saltzman (Penfield, N.Y.) added to the Gulls' successful night as she had 11 service aces, five kills and 17 assists in the second match. Junior outside hitter Lexy Fitzkee (Fallston, Md.) tacked on 14 kills and six digs to give Salisbury a solid tournament victory. The Sea Gulls went undefeated (4-0) in the two-day event.

Salisbury will head to York, Pa. to face Capital Athletic Conference foe York College on Sept. 16 before returning home to host the SU Invitational on Sept. 18 and 19.
