Capital Athletic Conference opener a breeze for Sea Gulls
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury
University volleyball team defeated University of Mary
Washington, 3-0, Wednesday evening on the road in the Capital
Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Salisbury (6-1, 1-0 CAC) swept the Eagles in straight sets 25-21,
25-11, 25-23, to claim its sixth straight victory of the young
season. Seniors Stacey Krebs (16 kills, eight
digs, 2.5 blocks) and Jaime Marzocchi (35 assists,
10 digs) showed their experience as they led the Gulls in the
match.
Stephanie Withers (five kills, four service aces)
and Alexandria Malesick and Nicole
Massarelli (2.5 blocks) each recorded five kills in the
game for SU. Juniors Gabby Long (16 digs -
team-high) and Rachel Downes (eight kills) had big performances in
front of a crowd of several hundred in the Goolrick Gymnasium.
Junior Anne Lutkenhaus had eight kills and seven digs for UMW (4-3, 0-1 CAC), while senior Kelley Hueber added eight kills and six digs. Freshman Katie Shiflett had 24 assists and 11 digs for UMW.
Salisbury will participate in the Swarthmore Tournament this weekend.
