NCAA awards Salisbury's Stacey Krebs with postgraduate scholarship

INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA announced its fall recipients for the 2008-2009 postgraduate scholarships and Salisbury University's Stacey Krebs was one of 29 women to receive the one-time grant of $7,500. Krebs was selected among Division I, II, and III candidates and was one of only nine women's volleyball players to receive the award.

The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants. Each sport season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women.

Krebs is the fifth Sea Gull student-athlete to receive the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship since 2001. Salisbury's other recipients include  Sue Ackermann (women's lacrosse, spring '08), Erin Budd (field hockey, fall '04), Kim Rementer (softball, spring '05) and Dan Meehan (men's soccer, fall '03).

Krebs helped to guide the Sea Gulls to an amazing season in '08 as the Sea Gulls posted a program best 36-2 record en route to a fifth Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) championship and a second straight trip to the NCAA tournament, fifth overall. In the NCAA tournament, the Sea Gulls won their first-ever postseason match before it fell in the second round. SU won 36 straight matches, ninth all-time in NCAA Division III volleyball history, after the Sea Gulls lost their first match of the season to top-ranked Juniata. For the season, Krebs finished with an even 400 kills to lead the team and was third in digs with 328.

Krebs was selected the CAC Player of the Year twice ('07, '08) and was a three-time All-CAC first team performer ('06,'07,'08). In addition, she was a two-time team captain and a two-time All-Region first team ('07,'08) honoree. Krebs finishes her career as the all-time leader in program history for kills (1,734) and attempts (4,717) and fourth in blocks (313). During her four-year career the Sea Gulls compiled a record of 112-36 (75.6 winning percentage) and won two CAC titles and made two trips to the NCAA tournament.

Krebs has also excelled in the classroom as the Physical Education major has posted a 3.82 grade point average, been named to the Dean's list five times and selected to the CAC All-Academic team every year she has been a Sea Gull. She has been selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District teams twice ('07, '08) where she was a second team and third team college division selection for District 2. Krebs was honored as a Maryland Association for Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) scholarship recipient. She has also worked the past two years in the Salisbury University Sports Information office where she edits and posts Sea Gull athletic photos to www.suseagulls.com and also serves as game day operations support.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.  An equitable approach is employed in reviewing each applicant's nomination form to provide opportunity to all student-athlete nominees to receive the postgraduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race.  In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through postgraduate study in an accredited graduate degree program.
