Salisbury University volleyball to host Dig Pink Night on Oct. 7th

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University volleyball team's game against Stevenson University on Tuesday, October 7, will be very meaningful and important both on and off the court. The game will mark a very important Capital Athletic Conference match but most importantly the Sea Gulls will be contributing to the Side-Out Foundation's "Dig Pink" rally, which is designed to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

The Sea Gulls and Mustangs will join over 500 volleyball teams across the country in the fight against breast cancer. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. but fans are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the festivities. Free t-shirts will be given out to the first 300 fans through the doors of Maggs Center. Plus, all fans in attendance have a chance to be selected to serve for a 2009 Ford Flex donated by Preston Automotive Group during the 2nd and 3rd sets of the match. Fans are more than welcome to purchase additional chances at the door, where all the proceeds and donations will be used to benefit "Dig Pink". These proceeds will be distributed among research teams focused on target therapies and molecular profiling as well as "living with cancer" organizations nationwide. All fans are also encouraged to wear something pink to show their support for breast cancer awareness.

"The key to beating cancer is early detection and research in the fight against this disease," said SU coach Margie Knight, who is a cancer survivor. "Having conquered cancer many years ago, I understand the importance of this fight and I am proud to have our team and University support such a great cause."

The Side-Out Foundation was established in 2004 to raise money and awareness about cancer through the recreational activity of volleyball. The name underscores the purpose of their organization, "Side-Out." In volleyball, a side-out occurs when one team wins a point while its opponent is serving, thereby regaining serve or control of play. Likewise in the war against cancer, Side-Out supports health care professionals and researchers help women and men with cancer maintain control of their own lives. This is through improved awareness, education, detection, treatment, and cure, thereby enabling them to live life to the fullest.
