Knight honored as AVCA Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year
LEXINGTON, KY. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its regional coaches of the year on Thursday and Salisbury University coach Margie Knight was named Division III Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year. She was one of eight coaches distinguished across the nation with the regional honor and now eligible for National Coach of the Year. This is Knight's first-ever regional coach of the year honor.
Knight has led the Sea Gulls (36-1) to their best season in school history. After losing the opening match of the year to top-ranked Juniata College, Salisbury has won 36 consecutive matches (tops in the nation). She led the Sea Gulls to their first-ever NCAA tournament victory on Thursday, November 13, with a 3-0 shutout against The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Under Knight's guidance, SU went a perfect 8-0 in the CAC and is currently ranked 22nd in the Bison/AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll. Knight helped propel SU to its first-ever national ranking this season when the Gulls made their debut in the poll on October 7. She has led the maroon and gold to an overall record of 281-149 in her 12 seasons at the helm at her Alma Mater.
The other seven regional coaches of the year are Rich Luenemann from Washington University-St. Louis (Central), Amber Warners from Calvin College (Great Lakes), Brian Schaefer from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (Midwest), Joel Dearing from Springfield College (New England), J.J. O'Connell from Stevens Institute of Technology (New York), Jenny McDowell from Emory University (South) and Don Flora from University of La Verne (West).
The eight regional coaches of the year will be presented with their award at the Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Omaha, Nebraska, on Thursday, December 18, at the 2008 AVCA Annual Convention.
