SU wins home invitational with 4-0 record

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University volleyball team won back-to-back matches Saturday afternoon to win the SU Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record. The Sea Gulls defeated New Jersey City University in five-sets and swept through The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey to cap the two-day tournament.

The Sea Gulls (13-5) defeated Richard Stockton (6-10) in straight sets 30-27, 30-25, 32-30. Junior Stacey Krebs led the way for the Sea Gulls with 16 kills and sophomore Rachel Downes was right behind her with 15. Sophomore Gabby Long led the team with 15 digs and junior Jamie Marzocchi recorded a team-high 49 assists.

SU and the NJCU Gothic Knights (11-4) went the distance as the two teams battled through a difficult back-and-forth match. SU won the first match 30-22 but the lead quickly evaporated as the Gothic Knights won the next two sets (30-13, 30-27) to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth set. The Gulls faced elimination but rallied to win the fourth set 31-29 and won the fifth set 15-6.

In the NJCU win, Krebs had 30 kills and Long made 24 digs. Downes added 12 kills and 13 digs while Marzocchi passed out 58 assists. Krebs was named the MVP of the invitational and sophomore Nicole Massarelli joined her on the all-tournament team.

Salisbury is off until Thursday, September 27, when they host Hood College at 7 p.m. in the Maggs Center.  

SU Invitational Notes: The all-tournament team consisted of Stacey Krebs, Salisbury University (MVP), Nicole Massarelli, Salisbury University, Kristina Mercier, Gettysburg, Kim Jackanich, Johns Hopkins, Audrey O'Donnell, Richard Stockton, Lizzelle Cintron, New Jersey City...Richard Stockton lost all four matches and ended the tournament with a 6-10 record...Johns Hopkins went 2-0 on Saturday and 3-1 in the tournament and are now 15-3....Gettysburg went 2-2 and the Bullets are 10-5 for the season...NJCU was 1-3 in the invite and are now 11-4.
