Salisbury makes New England debut, Gulls head home with two wins

MEDFORD, Mass. - The Salisbury University volleyball team debut in the New England region was a successful one as the Sea Gulls won two of their four matches at the two-day Tufts Invitational which was held right outside Boston.

SU's Stacey Krebs was named to the seven player all-tournament team as the sophomore outside hitter led the Sea Gulls in kills every match as she compiled 47 kills and had two double-doubles throughout the Friday-Saturday tournament.

The Sea Gulls defeated Emmanuel in straight games, 3-0, on Saturday morning before they got swept by MIT by the same score. Salisbury defeated SUNY Brockport 3-2 on Friday afternoon before the host Jumbos of Tufts blanked the Sea Gulls, 3-0. Tufts went 4-0 at its invitational.

Krebs had 10 kills and eight service aces in the victory over Emmanuel. Senior Abbey Petrecca had 30 assists, sophomore Jaime Marzocchi made 14 digs and junior Lynn Cipollone threw down 10 kills as Salisbury won 30-11, 30-16, 30-18.

In the second match on Saturday, Krebs posted her second double-double of the weekend as she had 11 kills and 13 digs. Petrecca had a big match as well as she made three block assists, 14 digs and 20 assists. Salisbury lost the match 17-30, 16-30, 26-30 to MIT.

On Friday, Krebs tallied 17 kills and 19 digs against SUNY Brockport while the trio of Lucy Rushing, Nicole Massarelli and Cipollone each contributed 11 kills in the win. Petrecca dished out 46 assists as Salisbury won 30-21, 30-28, 19-30, 27-30, 15-8.

The Sea Gulls hung tough with the Jumbos as they were able to get past the 20-point plateau twice but in the end lost 15-30, 23-30, 22-30. Krebs had eight kills, Cipollone had six kills and Petrecca added 26 assists.

Salisbury will now return its concentration back onto the Capital Athletic Conference as the Sea Gulls will play at the University of Mary Washington at 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 4.
