GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Salisbury University
volleyball team had a strong showing this weekend at the 2006
Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College.
The Sea Gulls (5-3) won three of four games over the two-day
tournament, including two convincing wins on Saturday afternoon
against Johns Hopkins University and the University of Scranton.
SU shutout in-state rival Johns Hopkins, 3-0. Sophomore
Jaime Marzocchi had 24 digs while fellow sophomore
Stacey Krebs threw down a team high 13 kills.
Senior Abbey Petrecca had 33 assists in the 30-27,
30-26, 30-21 win.
The Sea Gulls won the Scranton match, 3-1, as both teams traded
games in the first two sets before SU put the game away to win
30-18, 28-30, 30-21, 30-12. SU had several players with high kill
counts, they included; junior Lynn Cipollone (15),
freshman Nicole Massarelli (14) and Krebs (14).
Petrecca led the Gulls with 49 assists and Marzocchi came up with
22 digs.
On Friday, the Sea Gulls split their two matches with a 3-0 win
over City College of N.Y. before they dropped a 3-1 contest to the
host Gettysburg.
In the first match the Gulls had a balance attack as nine
different players had two or more kills. Freshman Savannah
Tinsley had a team high 22 assists and freshman
Gabby Long led at Gulls with 18 digs. The scores
of the City College of N.Y. game were 30-10, 30-13, 30-11.
Gettysburg took the first two games and didn't look back in the
Bullets' 3-1 win over SU as the Sea Gulls lost 29-31, 21-30, 30-23,
16-30.
Petrecca tallied a team high 42 assists and 18 digs, Krebs had
17 kills and Marzocchi added 19 digs in the loss.
Salisbury will next play on Tuesday, September 12 as they host
Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary's (Md.) at 7 p.m. in the
Sea Gulls home opener.
