LOS ANGELES – The Salisbury University women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over host Occidental College on Sunday afternoon in the Sea Gulls' first match over spring break.
Salisbury (7-2) picked up two points in the doubles matches earning victories in both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Annika Kezman and Julia Kwedi got the maroon and gold off to a solid start picking up an 8-1 victory in first doubles. Sophomore Jordan Schaefer and freshman Sydney Soto earned the second maroon and gold victory of the day in second doubles as the team posted a hard fought 9-7 win.
The Tigers (2-4) picked up their only two victories of the day in third doubles, 8-4, and in a decisive third set in first singles 6-4, 3-6, and 10-8.
The Gulls posted a 5-1 score line in singles with Kwedi leading the way. She continued her success in No. 2 singles earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Junior Taylor Cooper earned the Sea Gulls' only shutout victory in singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Soto and Schaefer continued their successful afternoons earning victories in the fourth and fifth singles spots. Soto recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory while Schaefer posted a 6-3, 6-2 score line. Junior Shannon Hickman, who was playing in the No. 5 spot, picked up Salisbury's final victory of the day posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The Sea Gulls return to action on Monday, March 19 when they take on Sewanee: The University of the South. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
