FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team opened up the 2018 season with a 9-0 win against Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site match played at the University of Mary Washington.
The Sea Gulls (1-0) began the match with a sweep of the doubles contests, beginning with an 8-0 victory at No. 2 by sophomore Jordan Schaefer and freshman Sydney Soto. At the top spot, sophomores Julia Kwedi and Annika Kezman came up with an 8-4 victory while the third point came from a 9-7 win at No. 3 by junior Taylor Cooper and freshman Ariana Leggio.
Cooper rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles with Salisbury winning all six matches in straight sets. Soto was good for a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 and Schaefer collected a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5. Kezman had a close opening set, winning 7-5 against Hannah Butler of Dickinson (1-2) before rolling to a 6-1 win in the second set at No. 1 singles.
Kwedi saw a similar result at No. 2, with the sets flipped, winning 6-1 in the first set before taking a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second. Junior Shannon Hickman secured Salisbury's sixth singles point with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Salisbury will return to the courts on Sunday, February 18 taking on Methodist University in another neutral site match at Mary Washington, beginning at 10 a.m.
