FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team took part in its first event of the 2014-15 season playing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast Championship hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
Junior Natalie Savage, seeded fourth in the championship single draw, picked up a first-round win, 6-4, 6-1, before falling in three sets to Johns Hopkins University's Elaine Baik. Savage won the opening set, 6-3, before dropping the next two, 6-3 and 6-1.
Senior Roxanne Alban dropped her opening match in the championship draw, 6-4, 6-0.
Sophomore Claudia Lohn picked up a pair of wins in the Blue 2 singles draw, defeating Randolph-Macon College's Toni McDonald, 6-3, 6-1, and battling to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory in the second round, before falling, 6-1, 7-5 to Johns Hopkins' Anna Kankanala.
Freshman Megan Soderlund, in her first collegiate action, fell 6-2, 6-1 in the Blue 3 single draw, but gained momentum throughout the consolation bracket, defeating Christopher Newport University's Kristi Wong, 9-7, and Moravian College's Sophia Osbourne, 8-2.
Junior Sam Babo fell in her first match in the Blue 4 singles draw to Juniata College's Mitsuki Koh. Babo won the first set, 6-2, but dropped the second by the same score, and Koh took the third-set super tiebreaker, 10-3.
In the Blue 5 singles draw, sophomore Megan Knapp picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win in the opening round, before being edged by Franklin & Marshall College's Stefana Vujinovic, 7-5, 6-0.
Freshman Sage Cole made one of Salisbury's deepest runs, in the Blue 6 singles draw, winning a pair of three-set matches. She took down Washington College's Megan Obarowski, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5, and Juniata's Emma Sebastian, 6-0, 2-6, 10-6 before being defeated in the quarterfinals.
In the championship doubles draw, Alban and Savage were knocked out in the opening round, but went into the consolation bracket, where they picked up an 8-3 win against Capital Athletic Conference members Shannon Ramsey and Emily Stumpfig from St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Lohn and senior Allison Lutz dropped a tight match in their opener in the Blue 1 doubles draw, 9-7, to Juniata's Heather Waring and Rachel Yuchisin before rolling into the consolation draw. There, the duo picked up an 8-2 win against St. Mary's Melissa Barall and Lauren Rost before defeating Muhlenberg College's Molly Kowalski and Kristi Wong, 8-3.
Babo and Soderlund fell in their first match of the Blue 2 doubles draw, 8-6, and saw the same fate in their consolation match.
Cole and Knapp picked up a first-round win in the Blue 3 doubles draw, 8-4, before being eliminated with an 8-5 defeat.
The Salisbury men's team will take part in their ITA Southeast Championship event at Mary Washington next weekend. With opening matches scheduled for Saturday, September 27.
