Sea Gulls compete at ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team competed this past weekend at the ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Championship, hosted by the University of Mary Washington.

Nine Sea Gulls made the trip, getting some work in preparation for the 2014 season.

Sophomore Natalie Savage opened her play in the championship draw with a 6-1, 6-2 win before falling in the second round, 6-4, 6-3.

Juniors Katie Youlios and Roxanne Alban each competed in the championship flight as well. Both fell in the opening round, though Youlios did not go down without a battle, playing Washington and Lee University's Kelsey Vella to a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) defeat.

In the Blue 1 and Blue 2 flights, junior Allison Lutz and freshman Claudia Lohn won their opening matches. Lutz won 6-0, 6-4 in her first-round match before falling 8-4 in the second round of the Blue 1 flight. Lohn dropped her first set in the Blue 2 flight, 7-6 (7-4), before battling back to claim the next set 6-2 and the third-set super tiebreaker, 10-7. Lohn also won in the second round of her flight, 8-3, before falling in the semifinals, 8-5.

Junior Sam Babo fell in her first round of the Blue 3 flight, 6-3, 6-2 and dropped an 8-1 decision in her consolation bracket.

In the Blue 4 flight, senior Charlotte Urian and sophomore Megan Knapp each earned one win. Urian won in the first round, 6-2, 6-2 before falling, 8-4, in the second. Knapp dropped a three-set match, 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 in the first round, but claimed an 8-2 win in the first round of the consolation bracket before falling in the consolation semifinals.

Sophomore Kari Lamboni went three long sets in the Blue 6 flight, winning 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 before falling in the second round, 8-3.

In doubles play, each of Salisbury's teams won at least one match. Alban and Savage earned an 8-3 win in the first round of the championship flight, before being eliminated, 8-1, in the second round.

Lutz and Youlios picked up two wins, earning an 8-5 victory in the first round of the Blue 1 Doubles flight and a hard-fought 9-8 (7-4) win in the second round, falling in the semifinals to the eventual champions, 8-4.

Babo and Lohn fell in the first round of the Blue 2 Doubles flight but collected an 8-3 win in their first consolation match and pushed their second-round tilt to the brink, falling 9-8 (7-5).

After falling 8-2 in the opening round of the Blue 3 Doubles flight, Knapp and Urian earned an 8-5 win in their consolation match.

The Sea Gulls begin the 2014 season with the Sea Gull Open at the SU Indoor Tennis Center on Feb. 7.
